The Duhallow Way (67 km) and Avondhu Way (101 km) combine to create an expansive 168 km linear walking trail that spans the western borders of County Waterford, traverses north County Cork, and extends into County Kerry, all while following the scenic valley of the River Blackwater.
Part of the European E8 route, this trail showcases a diverse range of landscapes and features. Hikers will enjoy contouring paths along mountain ridges with breathtaking views, as well as passing by historical sites such as ancient standing stones, stone circles, and burial cairns. The route also includes more contemporary landmarks like cillíns (infant burial grounds) and holy wells.
Along the journey, you will encounter the towns of Fermoy and Millstreet, along with the charming villages of Kilworth, Ballynamona, and Bweeng.
While the off-road sections are generally close to public roads, the trail often ventures into more secluded mountainous areas covered in forestry, especially at higher elevations.
Approximately 28% of the route runs alongside roads with fast-moving traffic, while the remaining sections mostly consist of quiet tarmac roads, forest tracks, bog paths, and trails through moorland and fields. Some areas may become wet and muddy during inclement weather. The trail is relatively flat until the last 15 kilometers, where hikers will face a notable climb of 560 meters under the Caherbarnagh and the Paps, although the overall ascent throughout the entire route totals 3,700 meters.
