Dogs and the rules

Can I bring a dog to an Irish beach?

On most beaches, yes, on a lead, and off it where the signs allow. The exceptions are the bathing beaches in summer: Fingal, for one, bans dogs from the Blue Flag area of Portmarnock, Donabate and Rush between 11am and 7pm from the 1st of June to the 15th of September, and most Blue Flag beaches keep dogs off the flagged bathing area in season. The sign at the car park is the rule for that beach.

Are dogs allowed in Ireland's national parks?

Yes, on a lead, in all six: Killarney, Glenveagh, Connemara, the Burren, Wicklow Mountains and Wild Nephin. The lead is for the sheep and the deer as much as for the dog, and a farmer may lawfully shoot a dog found worrying sheep. The houses and formal gardens inside a park, Muckross House for one, usually keep dogs outside.

What about forest parks and Coillte woods?

Coillte's forests and forest parks allow dogs; the rule on most of them is a lead, and the signs at the entrance say where it is relaxed. Lough Key, Avondale, Gougane Barra and Ards Forest Park are all walked with dogs every day.

Which places on this site do not take dogs?

Castles, houses, museums, gardens, distilleries, wildlife parks and most islands with a ferry. Assistance dogs are the exception everywhere. Where a place is run by the OPW, its own page says whether dogs are allowed in the grounds.
